Last weekend I took a team of six beach athletes from the FNC Branches, the only NSW athletes, to the third and final round of The Fastest Man on Sand series at Mooloolaba. Three of the athletes were our own and they all did brilliantly considering the competition was dominated by athletes from Kurrawa and Alex Headland. It was a fantastic experience for them all running on Sunshine Coast sand in preparation for AUSSIES in a couple of weeks. Lachlan Watt (U15) who was competing at his first FMOS placed 2nd in flags and 5th in sprints, Cahrizma McDonald Cass placed 9th in flags and 2nd in sprints and Claudia Crawford placed 8th in flags and 3rd in sprints. A fantastic effort from all and a big thank you to Glynis Watt for her support on the day.

Another congratulations and thank you  goes out to our patrols from last weekend. A bunch of great young patrolling members conducted rescues of swimmers on both days. The young people in our club are a credit to their generation and are wonderful leaders.  As a community we should be very proud that we have a group of volunteers that are dedicated to keeping our beach a safe environment. Support them by always swimming between the flags.

The 2016 Stramit NSW Surf Life Saving Country Championships is one of the biggest events on the surf sports calendar. The 2 day carnival attracts clubs outside of the Newcastle to Illawarra corridor and saw over 4000 people flocking to the beautiful South West Rocks. With 1500 competitors, hundreds of volunteers and a large contingency of families and supporters the carnival was an extraordinary success. The event showcases some of the State's best surf sport athletes and amongst them were the Caba Crew Champions.

All our athletes put in strong performances  from our Under 8”s through to our Masters achieving many great results. Cabarita Beach placed 15th overall out of the 49 clubs and I would like to congratulate you all. Thank you to Carnival Team Manager Kerri and to the Age Managers and Club Officials for your time over the weekend.

Congratulations to our Gold medal March Past team for an outstanding performance. A big thank you to  Leticia Gillard and Shirley Clarke for their coaching of the team and Good luck for Country next weekend. Day 1 of Branch Champs  and the individual events has left my head spinning even trying to recall all the fantastic achievements from the Caba Crew. Way too many results to mention but I would like to comment on one of the most brilliant displays of sportsmanship from two of our U14 boys. I'll set the scene. Last round of flags, the decider of first and second place and an accidental connection with a shoulder and front tooth. Both boys stopped! The shoulder asked the tooth if he was OK not even concerned about the flag that marked a gold medal. Mate ship and tooth still intact, Shoulder offered Tooth the flag but Tooth declined. How do you solve this dilemma…. Paper Scissors Rock of course! After a few rounds Shoulder won but as area Marshall at that time, I overruled and offered a tie for first as in my eyes and everyone that watched on Lachlan Watt and Finn Whitney you are true champions both deserving.

Day 2 was all about team events and this is where we as a club shine. The gold winning All Age Relay set a high standard for the day and that's where it stayed. A special mention to the U8 who came home with enough medals that if the cyclone came we would have to tie them down and to our Golden Girl Isabella Tate who came away with overall point score.  To our athletes, Officials, Age Managers and Coaches, congratulations and well done to you all.

Next Week we are off to the Stramit NSWSLS Country Championships which is always the highlight of our season.  Watch out South West Rocks, here comes the Caba Crew!

ROUND 2 OF THE FASTEST MAN ON SAND series was held at Coolangatta last Saturday. The rainy conditions certainly did not dampen the enthusiasm of Cabarita Beach SLSC  Team  attending and out of  over 250 of Queensland best beach athletes there were 8 from FNC Branch, the only representatives from NSW. Five of the FNC group were the Caba Crew consisting of Klyde Milroy, Stirling Crawford, Reef Sommerville, Finn Whitney and Claudia Crawford. It was yet another great carnival with even greater results and much personal improvement.  All the team made it to finals in their events with Reef placing 3rd in the U13s and Claudia taking out series winner in the u15s for the beach sprint events. A fantastic achievement from all.

Cudgen Headland SLSC for hosted an extremely successful day last Sunday. There are many friendships between the two clubs and the day offered the kids the opportunity to compete with mates and ham up that friendly rivalry. By all accounts everyone enjoyed it and I have heard many comment that they would like it to turn into an annual event.

Back on home turf we had a mini mini nippers day and if the squeals of delight coming off the beach was any sign, it was a morning packed full of fun. Thank you to those age managers involved for coordinating the activities and to The two Matildas, Chloe, Melia and Michael for their one on one tuition with younger Nippers.

Happy Holidays and a very Merry Caba Christmas to all our Nippers and their Families.

A big congratulations to our three athletes who competed at Fastest Man On Sand last weekend at Kurrawa. This is a beach only carnival and is also a  selection carnival for the U19s to Opens. It  was also the first in this seasons series and the first for our team and they did amazingly well. Stirling Crawford (U12) came 7th in sprints, Reef Sommerville (U13) came 4th in sprints and 3rd in flags and Claudia Crawford (U15 EX Nipper) came 1st in sprints and 6th in flags. What a way to show the Queenslanders! The most exciting thing is that the National Coach was watching the Caba Crew and had many positive comments. I personally can not wait until the next round in January at Coolangatta and if you are interested (u11- opens) please contact me as I will have to organise clearance as this is a QLD Series and therefore out of our branch.

Thank you to the U14s who have posted Take 3 posters all around our community. I’m am certain your message is being shared by the community. Well done.

A reminder to all - especially our teenagers who like to ignore the parents. Sunscreen, cover and hydration.

See you all on the beach

Congratulations to our totally amazing Under 14s for a very successful Take Over last Sunday. Take Over you question?? The Age Managers were stripped of their shirts, relieved of their duties for the morning and demoted to Nippers. The new Age Managers then entertained little Nippers and our age challenged Nippers to a great day of games, challenges and way too much fun. The morning finished with a surprise visit from Santa who just happened to be cruising past on this scooter. The morning a great success and is a credit to the 14’s.

Not content with just Christmas break up day fun, the Under 14s also coordinated our first ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ mini beach clean up. Nippers and their parents scoured the beach and grass areas around the beach entrance and the end result was one and half kilos of plastic debris and a much cleaner beach. ‘Take3’ ambassador Shakyra Gillard would like to thank everyone who participated with our clean up and I would like to thank Shakyra, Zane, Chloe and Melia who then went on to itemise and tally the rubbish. This important data was then sent  to Project Manager Sarah Beard in Sydney for analysis. The kids should be proud of themselves. These small steps toward a healthier environment are going to have a big impact on our community.

Another congratulation goes to the  FNC Team who returned last Sunday from competing at the NSW SLS Interbranch Titles at Cape Hawke. The victorious team won again the Country Cup and placed 5th overall  on the leaderboard out of 11 Branches. Excellent results from all. As for  our Caba girls,  Cahrizma placed 3rd in her sprints and 4th in flags, Jemima placed 8th in her sprints and 9th in flags and Claudia placed 3rd in her sprints and 6th in flags. Well done!

Sand athletes, Finn, Reef, Cahrizma, Stirling and Claudia are competing at the Fastest Man on the Sand at Kurrawa this Saturday. This is the first time for them all at this competition and we wish them lots of luck.

A big congratulations to all our brand new Surf Rescue Certificate awardees, Chloe Brawley, Cameron Brown, Jacob Chandler, Danni Geeves, Shakyra Gillard, Grace Johnson, Matilda Jones, Ella Larkin, Cahrizma McDonald Cass, Matilda Nimmo, Zane Patience, Sarah Vasseur, Lachlan Watt and Finn Whitney. What a fantastic bunch of kids you are.

With the postponement of the Lennox carnival, it was business as usual for  Sunday Nippers and what a great day we had. The Under 6’s and 7’s skills and confidence is booming which is a joy to watch. Our older Nippers were in full training mode for next week's teams carnival at Byron. Good Luck to you all. Thank you to all our volunteer Age Managers whose mentoring and encouragement makes our Nipper Sundays such a fun learning environment . A special mention to Blake Gillard and Aislinn Wilson who assist the 13’s and 14’s and are a great asset to the the team. Age Managers Tim Whitney, Dave Sommerville and Rob Bryant greatly appreciate your dedication and commitment.

Good luck to all our athletes competing at Byron Bay Teams next Sunday. The format for the day has been altered so water events can be done first up. This means that the March Past and All Age Relay will be the last events for the day. Thank you to Zane Patience and Shakyra Gillard who will be representing Cabarita Beach SLSC at the Branch level of Junior Lifesaver of the Year interviews. You both represent the club with such maturity and enthusiasm. Have fun everyone and ‘Go the yellow and blue’!

Finally thank you all our parents who are heading down to Ballina on Saturday to attend the officials course. Dropping a big hint here…… see you on the sprint track on Sunday!!!

Last Sunday we had 5 wonderful Under 14 Nippers  sit for interviews for Junior Lifesaver of the Year. Bree-Anne Wihlborg, Cahrizma McDonald Cass, Shakyra Gillard, Finn Whitney and Zane Patience where all outstanding nominees and should all be very proud of themselves.  JAC, Heath Davies announce that afternoon that our representatives for JLOTY this season are Zane Patience and Shakyra Gillard.  Well Done. We would also like to thank Alyssia and Sam Wood, our major sponsors from the Beach Hotel for their generosity and continual support of our young athletes and for making the interview experience such a positive one. Alyssia, Sam and President Pat have all commented on how well they all interviewed. We should be very proud of them all.

The club would also like to congratulate our 3 beachies Jemima Hynes (U13), Cahrizma McDonald Cass (U14) and Claudia Crawford  (U15) for their selection on the FNC Interbranch Team. The girls will go on to compete at the Interbranch Titles at Cape Hawke in December and we will all be cheering them on.

The enthusiasm of the Under 14s is making our  ‘Take 3 ‘ for the Sea message of everyday, everywhere - pick up 3 pieces of rubbish to look after our marine environment quickly infiltrating not only our club but the local community. Sydney based Project Manager, Sarah Beard  is most impressed  with how quickly that Caba Crew has embraced such an important environmental project. New Junior Ambassador, Shakyra Gillard is supported by a very eager group of like minded Under 14s. They are  excited about organising the “Team Up To Clean Up” day and as Senior Ambassador for ‘Take 3’ I am looking forward  to working alongside such a wonderful bunch of young leaders.

Mini Nippers next Sunday as there is a carnival on at Lennox. Please keep in contact with your child's Age Manager especially in regard to Byron Carnival. This is a teams carnival and teams are  have already been organised.
You might have noticed that the old green chalk board downstairs has had a bit of a make over. Its still the old chalk board but is now going to be the focal point for information for our Nippers, Youth and our 'Take 3' project. Please if you are walking past stop and take a look.
